음, 다른 나라의 상황은 제가 잘 모르겠지만, 요나스가 영화 음악을 맡았던 영화들이 내 나라인 South Korea에서 몇 번 상영되었습니다.
그가 작업했던 영화 President가 2021년 9월에 13회 DMZ International Documentary Film Festival이 열렸고, 서울에서 가까운 Goyang-si라는 곳에서 상영했지만, 평일 늦은 저녁에 상영했기 때문에 그때 사무실에 있었던 나는 도저히 갈 수가 없었습니다.
2023년 5월에는 President가 아프리카 영화제(Africa Film Festival)로 Seoul과 Busan에서 잠시 상영되었는데 이것은 그때는 내 건강 문제때문에 관람하지 못했습니다.
두 번의 기회를 놓쳤지만, 나는 앞으로 10년 안에는 한국의 다른 영화제에서 이 영화를 볼 수 있을 거라고 생각합니다 하하. Zimbabwe를 다룬 영화를 드물군요. 기회가 되면 한국의 극장에서 President를 보고 싶네요.
Well, I'm not too familiar with how it's been in other countries, but the films Jonas has scored have been screened a few times in my country, South Korea.
The film he worked on called President was screened at the 13th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival in September 2021, which was held in Goyang-si, near Seoul. However, it was shown late on a weekday evening, which meant I was still stuck at the office with no possibility to attend.
In May 2023, President was briefly screened at the Africa Film Festival in Seoul and Busan, but I couldn't attend then either due to health issues at the time.
I missed two opportunities, but I think I'll be able to see this film at another Korean film festival within the next ten years, haha. Films about Zimbabwe are rare. I'd love to see President at a Korean theater if I have the chance.
요나스가 작업한 영화 Hana Korea의 개봉한다는 소식이 들렸고, 2025년 9월에 한국 Busan International Film Festival에서 개봉하는 게 무려 World Premiere였습니다. 2015년 육아 휴직 중이었던 나는 기회가 된다면 이 영화를 직접 보고 싶었습니다. 오, 난 9월까지 너무나 순진했는데요.I heard that another film Jonas worked on called Hana Korea was getting released, and it was set to have its World Premiere at none other than the Busan International Film Festival in September 2025. As I was still on parental leave throughout 2025, I wanted to go see this film myself if I got the chance. Oh boy, I was so naive, right up until September.
2025년 9월 9일 낮 2시부터 예매할 수 있었는데 세상에. 나는 9월 17일 밤 6시까지 영화 티켓을 단 한 장도 구하지 못했습니다. 예매가 시작한 지 10분 만에 거의 모든 영화의 티켓이 매진되었습니다. 9월 9일부터 예매 페이지에서 24시간 동안 티켓을 구하기 위해 예매 페이지에서 새로 고침만 계속 하면서 나는 불면증이 생겼는데 12월인 아직도 그 병이 고쳐지지 않았습니다. 농담이지만, 난 요즘 새벽 3시에 전화가 오면 받을 수 있어요 하하. 난 BIFF의 영화 티켓을 구하는 게 그렇게 힘들 줄 몰랐습니다. 9월 17일 밤에 취소표로 올라 온 18일의 영화 티켓을 간신히 딱 1장 예매할 수 있었어요. 비록 영화관 맨 끝의 구석 자리였지만, 나는 드디어 예매에 성공하게 되었을 때, 기뻐서 어쩔 줄을 몰랐습니다.
Tickets went on sale starting at 2 PM on September 9th, 2025, and… oh my goodness. I couldn't get a single ticket until 6 PM on September 17th. Almost every film had sold out within 10 minutes of the tickets going live. From September 9th, I spent 24 hours straight refreshing the booking page trying to get tickets, and I developed insomnia. It's December now, and I still haven't recovered from that illness. These days, if my phone rings at 3 AM, I can still answer it no problem, haha (just kidding). I had no idea that getting tickets to BIFF would be this difficult. On the night of September 17th, I just barely managed to snag one ticket from a cancellation for a screening on the 18th. Even though my seat was way in the back corner of the theater, I was so overjoyed when I finally succeeded in booking my ticket.
음, 한국의 지리를 아예 모르는 사람을 위해 비유하자면, 한국의 Seoul과 Busan은, 캐나다의 Vancouver와 Toronto같은 관계라고 생각하면 됩니다. 두 지역은 서로 멀리 떨어져 있어서 편하게 오고 가려면 고속 버스나 기차나 비행기를 타야만 갈 수 있어요.
한국에서 가장 큰 영화 페스티벌인 BIFF 행사 기간에는 한국에서 가장 빠른 고속 철도인 KTX도 좌석이 거의 매진이라 Seoul에 가까이 살고 있는 나는 KTX 티켓조차도 영화 설국열차(Snowpiercer)의 꼬리 칸을 탄 것처럼 맨 마지막 칸, 맨 마지막 자리를 타고 다녀왔습니다. 뭐, 아무려면 어때요. 난 영화 티켓을 손에 넣었으니까요!
So, when it comes to Seoul and Busan in Korea -- for those unfamiliar with Korean geography, you can think of them as being similar to Vancouver and Toronto in Canada. The two regions are far apart from each other, so the best way to travel between them is to take a high-speed bus, train, or plane.
During BIFF, which is Korea's largest film festival, even the KTX -- Korea's fastest high-speed rail -- was nearly sold out. So even though I live near Seoul, I ended up having to ride the very last car, in the very last seat, as though I was in the tail car of the movie Snowpiercer. Well, whatever. At least I still got my hands on my movie ticket!
Hana Korea는 2025년 9월 18일, 9월 20일, 9월 24일에 총 3번을 상영을 했는데 300명+300명+200명 이렇게 총 800명이 이 영화를 봤습니다. 영화는 3번 전부 매진이었습니다. 영화 상영이 끝난 후에 배우와 감독을 직접 만나서 질문을 할 수 있었던 날은 18일과 20일이었고, 18일은 영화가 끝나고 야외 무대에서 한 번 더 배우들을 볼 수 있었습니다.
Hana Korea was screened a total of three times, on September 18th, 20th, and 24th, 2025. A total of 800 people saw it, with 300, 300, and 200 in the audience each time. All three screenings were sold out. On the 18th and 20th, attendees could meet the actors and director in person for a Q&A session after the film. As well, on the 18th, we got to see the actors again on an outdoor stage after the movie ended.
영화를 본 사람이 아직 많지 않아서 나는 이해를 돕기 위해 영화의 전반적인 내용을 말할 수밖에 없습니다.

Since not many people have seen the movie yet, I unfortunately will need to explain the general plot to help you understand. Heads up for spoilers from here onwards.
음, 영화를 보기 전에 손수건을 한 장 준비해 두어야 합니다. 영화는 제법 슬픕니다. 영화가 끝나고 엔딩 크레딧이 올라갈 때 나를 포함한 주위 관객들 모두 울고 있었습니다.
103분짜리 영화 내용을 한 줄로 요약하자면, 북한에 있는 엄마를 위해 남한으로 넘어왔지만, 다시는 돌아갈 수 없는 딸의 이야기를 그리고 있습니다.
Mm, I do advise you to prepare a handkerchief before watching the movie. It's quite sad. When they started rolling the end credits, everyone in the audience, including me, was crying.
To summarize the 103-minute film in one line, it depicts the story of a daughter who crosses over to South Korea for the sake of her mother (who's in North Korea), but can never go back to North Korea.
영화의 주 배경이 되는 곳의 정식 명칭은 The Settlement Support Center for North Korean Refugees, 약칭으로 Hanawon(House of Unity)이라고 불리는 영화의 주된 장소는 한국 대통령실 급의 국가 보안 시설입니다. 아마도 보안상의 이유로, 실제 장소에서 촬영될 수는 없었을 거예요. 이곳에서는 북한에서 남한으로 온 사람들의 적응을 돕습니다. 하나원의 이름은 한국어로 Hana='one', Won은 '시설'을 뜻합니다. 시설의 이름 자체가 통일을 염원하고 있어요.
The main setting of the film, officially called The Settlement Support Center for North Korean Refugees and abbreviated as Hanawon (House of Unity), is a facility with a level of national security equivalent to the South Korean presidential office. They probably couldn't film at the real location for security reasons. This facility helps refugees from North Korea adapt to life in South Korea. The name Hanawon comes from the Korean words Hana, which means "one," and Won, which means "facility." The name of the facility itself expresses a longing for reunification.
주연 배우인 Minha Kim, Seohyun An, Jooryoung Kim 중에서 실제 탈북자 여성과 가장 비슷한 인상이었던 건 Jooryoung Kim인 것 같네요. 나는 10대 후반, 20대 초반 여성 탈북자를 Squid Game 1의 Jung Hoyeon과 비슷하게 묘사할 줄 알았는데 그렇지 않게 풀어나가서 영화 속 주인공들이 색다르게 느껴졌습니다. 영화는 어린 여성으로서 혼자서 세상을 살아 가기 어려운 것과 탈북자로서 남한에 적응하기 어려운 점을 동시에 그리고 있습니다. 그리고 슬프게도 실화를 기반으로 하고 있습니다.
Between the lead actors Minha Kim, Seohyun An, and Jooryoung Kim, I thought Jooryoung Kim looked the closest to an actual female North Korean defector. I had expected female defectors in their late teens to early twenties to be depicted similarly to the character Jung Hoyeon from Season 1 of Squid Game, but the film didn't go in that direction, so the protagonists felt unique. The film simultaneously portrays the difficulty of surviving the world on your own as a young woman, and the unique challenges that North Korean defectors face in adjusting to life in South Korea. And sadly, it is based on a true story.
피아노로 연주하는 어쿠스틱한 곡들이 영화 중간중간에 삽입되어 있습니다. 제법 요란한 K-Pop 노래도 한 곡 나옵니다.
한국 사람이라면 누구나 아는 국민체조(Korean National Gymnastics) 노래에 나는 피식 웃었습니다.
주인공이 가끔씩 Hanawon에서 혼자 드럼을 치며 감정을 추스리던 장면이 있었는데, 나는 이게 약간 이해가 안 되기는 했습니다. 북한 안에서 주인공이 어떤 사람이었는지 영화 속에서 직접적으로 묘사된 적은 없어서요. 북한에서 드럼을 배우려면 형편이 꽤 좋아야 할텐데, 그렇게 보이지는 않았거든요.
Acoustic piano pieces are interspersed throughout the film. There's also a pretty upbeat, in-your-face K-Pop song that comes on in one scene.
I chuckled at the Korean National Gymnastics song, which every Korean knows.
There were a few scenes where the protagonist would play the drums alone at Hanawon to soothe herself, which I found a bit hard to understand, because the film never directly portrays what kind of life she'd lived in North Korea. Learning to play the drums in North Korea would require a very comfortable family background, and she didn't seem to have that.
서울의 야경이 화면에 자주 나오는데, 어떨 때 그 야경은 주인공을 달래주는 것 같았고, 어떨 때는 주인공에게 너무 차갑고 무심하게 비정하게 느껴질 때도 있었습니다. 야경은 주로 남영역(Namyeong Station), 서울역(Seoul Station)에서 찍은 것 같았습니다.
Night views of Seoul frequently come on screen. At times, those night views seem to comfort the protagonist, while at others, they come across to her as too cold, indifferent, and harsh. These scenes seemed to have been primarily shot at Namyeong Station and Seoul Station.
주인공이 마지막에 삼육대학교(Sahmyook University)에서 간호사 실습을 하게 될 때 나는 백석(Paek Sŏk = Baek Seok)이라는 North Korean poet의 Hometown이라는 시를 떠올릴 수밖에 없었는데, 감독이나 각본가가 이 시를 알고 영화를 찍은 건지 궁금했습니다.
When the protagonist finally begins her nursing practicum at Sahmyook University, I couldn't help but think of the poem "Hometown" by the North Korean poet Paek Sŏk (Baek Seok). I wondered if the director or screenwriter knew of this poem when making the film.
음, 가엾은 요나스는 영화 엔딩 크레딧에 한국어로 "YONASU BI-JE-RE"라고 적혀 있었는데 그의 한국어로 표기된 이름은 정확하진 않았네요. 영화의 엔딩 크레딧이 올라갈 때 우리는 드디어 요나스의 목소리를 들을 수 있습니다. 마지막 곡의 제목은 "Hike To The Sun"이고, 매우 아름다운 곡입니다. 이 곡에는 한국인 여성과 요나스가 같이 노래를 부르는데 한국어로 된 가사도 포함되어 있습니다.
Hmm, poor Jonas had his name Romanized in Korean as "YONASU BI-JE-RE" in the film's ending credits, which isn't quite accurate. As the film's end credits roll, we can finally hear Jonas' voice. The ending theme is called "Hike To The Sun," and it's very beautiful. This song also features a Korean female vocalist who sings with Jonas, and includes lyrics in Korean.
영화가 끝나고, 영화 그 자체에 대한 질문은 없었지만 한국인 관객들이 감독에게 했던 질문들은 다음과 같습니다.
한국을 촬영하는데 어려움은 없었는지, 그리고 한국을 더 잘 알 수 있다면 넣고 싶었던 이야기는?

While there were no questions about the film itself when the film ended, the questions that Korean audience members asked the director were as follows:
Did you have any difficulty filming in Korea, and if you wanted to know more about Korea, what story would you have wanted to add?
What made the director, who's from Denmark, become interested in Korea?
Since it's a small film, it's unlikely to have large viewership numbers — is that okay?

아일랜드 밴드인 U2는 기회가 되면 통일이 된 한국에서 공연을 하고 싶다고 하네요.
외국인에게만 "통일된" 한국이 더 각별한 걸까요?
대부분의 한국인에게 탈북자에 대해 어떻게 생각하냐고 묻는다면 비정하게도 그저 "한국어를 할 줄 아는 외국인"으로 느껴진다고 말할 수도 있어요.
분단된 시간이 너무 길어서, 한국인인 나에게 있어서 통일은 어떤 때는 가까운 것 같기도 하지만, 평소에는 그저 멀게만 느껴집니다.
The Danish band Iceage once participated in the DMZ Peace Train Music Festival in 2019.
The Irish band U2 has expressed a desire to perform in a unified Korea if the opportunity arises.
Is a "unified" Korea more special only to foreigners?
If you ask most South Koreans what they think of North Korean defectors, they might say -- coldly -- that they just feel like "foreigners who can speak Korean."
For me as a Korean, though there are times that unification feels a little closer, we've been divided for so long that it usually just feels way beyond reach.
영화관에서 영화를 보고 바로 이어진 야외 무대 행사에도 참여할 수 있었습니다.
영화를 보며 울다가 퉁퉁 부은 눈으로 감독과 각본가, 배우들을 향해 힘껏 손을 흔들었습니다.
나의 시간 관계상, 영화만 한 편 보고 바로 서울로 올라갈 수밖에 없었어요.
고작 영화 한 편을 보려고 하루 동안 서울에서 부산을 오고갔지만, 나는 매우 만족스러웠습니다.
서울로 돌아가는 부산역 Krispy Kreme Doughnuts 매장 너머로 바다가 보였습니다.
After watching the film at the theater, I was able to attend the outdoor stage event that took place immediately afterward.
With my still-puffy eyes from crying during the movie, I waved energetically at the director, screenwriter, and actors.
Due to my schedule, I only had time to watch the one film and had to head straight back to Seoul after it ended.
Though I traveled all the way from Seoul to Busan and back in a single day just to see one movie, I was deeply satisfied.
On the way back to Seoul, I could see the sea beyond the Krispy Kreme Doughnuts shop at Busan Station.
언제라고 장담하진 못하지만, 요나스는 이 영화의 사운드 트랙 앨범을 낼 계획이 있다고 했습니다. 우리 같이 기대해 보기로 하죠.
Although he couldn't guarantee exactly when, Jonas said he plans to release a soundtrack album for this film. Let's look forward to it together.
